JOB DESCRIPTION & BENEFIT DESCRIPTION

Dispatchers are generally the first contact the public has with the police department when they need help.  Because of this a dispatcher must posses a customer service mindset.  Treating each caller as if his or her call is the most important thing you will do today should be the goal of every dispatcher.

Dispatchers receive complaints from public concerning crimes and police emergencies.  They will handle all radio, teletype and telephone communications between Department employees, outside law enforcement agencies, public utilities, public works agencies and the citizens of Wayne.  Dispatchers will also be responsible for general clerical duties, to include but not be limited to typewriting, data entry, handling of monies, issuance of permits, and any other duties as assigned.

Dispatchers work rotating shifts and have flexible days off.  Shifts worked are (1) 7am - 3pm, (2) 3pm - 11pm, (3) 11pm - 7am.  Holidays worked are paid at double time and one half the normal pay rate.  Dispatchers can accumulate up to 168 hours of compensatory time at time and a half.  Dispatchers earn two weeks of vacation and 96 hours of sick leave per year.  The City pays 97% of the employee's health/life/disability insurance and 90% of the family medical insurance.  After 1 year of employment each employee is required to participate in the City of Wayne retirement plan.  The City has eight paid holidays and two personal days.
