Tree Trimming
The
Electric Distribution in its effort to ensure quality and continuity of
electrical service performs tree trimming through out the year. The Distribution staff has received
schooling on the proper tree trimming techniques to ensure that there is no
damage to the tree but also giving the maximum conductor clearance. The Distribution staff will try to contact
property owners before any trimming takes place. Sometimes trimming will be done without notification, such as in
emergency, outage and storm situations, where the crews on site deem that
trimming and or removing a tree will ensure the safety to all and help in the
restoration of power. If you have any
questions about tree trimming contact us at eldist@cityofwayne.org or call us at
402-375-2896.

In 1993 the City of
Wayne initiated a re-lighting project converting the City’s street lights from
mercury vapor (MV) fixtures to high pressure sodium fixtures (HPS). A study showed that a 250 watt HPS fixture
will produce 24,750 mean lumens whereas a 400 watt MV fixture will produce
18,900 mean lumens. By changing
fixtures it would create approximately a 30% increase in lumens at150 watts
less per fixture. By changing 138 of
these fixtures on Third St. and Main St., the City saved over $3000 annually,
at the rate of these savings, full return on the investment for the 250 HPS
fixtures would be approximately five years.
Along with this project the city changed the rest of the street lighting
from 175 watt MV to 100 and 150 watt HPS fixtures, increasing the City’s
savings. The long-term result of the
street light change out would be 30% more light for 40% less cost.
The Electric Distribution
Dept. maintains over 750 street and security lights through out the city as
well as on the campus of Wayne State College.
As the bulbs in most of these lights start to burn out the lights will
start to cycle off and on. A light that
stays on, even in daylight conditions, is usually the result of a damaged
photocell. If you notice these or any
other problems with lights, contact us by filling out our Street
light report form and a crew will respond in a timely manner to repair or
replace the light.

The City
of Wayne has four sets of traffic signals.
These signals are owned by The State of Nebraska Dept. of Roads, but are
maintained by the Electric Distribution Dept.
The signals are located at the intersections of 2nd and Main
St., 3rd and Main St., 7th and Main St., and just west of
the intersection of 7th and Sherman St. The signal by 7th and Sherman is mainly used as a
school crosswalk for children crossing 7th St. (hwy. 35), coming and
going to school. The City also has two
other lighted school crosswalks, one at the intersection of 5th and
Main St. and the other is on 7th St. between Walnut St. and Windom St. These crosswalks are in operation from 7:15
A.M. to 9:15 A.M. and 3:15 P.M. to 4:15 P.M. on weekdays during the school
season. Motorist should be aware of
people in the crosswalks at all times.

The City of Wayne
Electric Distribution Dept. continually installs new equipment and maintains
existing equipment to keep outages to a minimum. However, things like storms, accidents, animals contacting
energized lines and equipment failure do cause problems from time to time.
In the event of a
power outage, please check your own fuses and breakers first. Also, find out if your neighbors are out of
power before calling in. This will
assist our crews in finding the problem.
If you live in a mobile home park, please check the pedestal outside the mobile
home as well as fuses and breakers inside.
If you live in an apartment
complex, you should check with your neighbors before calling the City of
Wayne. If they have power, the problem
is very likely a problem within the apartment complex and not one that would
involve the City of Wayne. You should
also check the main breakers for your apartment. These are usually found in a mechanical room or on an outside
wall of the apartment building. Please
check with your building manager concerning the location of the breakers.
It is our goal to repair any problems and restore power to our customers as
quickly and safely as possible.
However, it is important that customers be aware that city employees can
not trouble shoot electrical problems beyond the service entrance or inside the
home or business. It is recommended that
this work be done only by a licensed electrician. It is also important for the customer to know that the Electric
Distribution Dept. may bill a service charge of $35.00 per hour during the normal
business hours and a $42.00 per hour after hours, if the power problem is
found to be on the customer’s property.
The number to call for power outages or power-related problems is (402) 375-2866
