How much of my water line is the city responsible for?
The city's responsibility stops at the main itself. The property owner owns everything from the corporation into the house. This includes the curb stop (your outside shutoff).

My water valve is leaking, will you guys come up and shut my water off?
According to city policy, we cannot actually shut your water off for you. We will furnish a shut-off rod, locate your curb stop, and place the rod on the shut-off all out of courtesy. Either the property owner or a plumber will actually have to shut it off.

Who do I call after hours in case of an emergency?
In case of an emergency after hours, weekends or holidays, you can call the police department. They will get a hold of the man on-call.

My sewer is running slow, who should I call?
If your sewer is running slow, call the city first. We will come and check the manholes in the area to see if our line may be plugged. This may save you a service charge if you call a plumber or a private sewer cleaner first.

Why is my drinking water cloudy sometimes?
This is due to an air pocket that may be in your line or the city's line. Usually you can run your water for a little bit to flush out the air. If the problem does not go away you can call us and we will flush a nearby hydrant to get the air out.

Backflow prevention, cross connection: What is it and what does it have to do with me?
A water cross connection is an actual or potential connection between a public water supply or consumer's water system and any source or system containing non-potable water or other substances. Potable water connections would include but not be limited to: water closets, urinals, sinks, hose bibs, dishwashers, lawn irrigation systems, AC units and hundreds of other possible connections. These connections are called cross-connections and have the possibility of backflowing non-potable substances into the potable water system

What is backflow?
Backflow is the unintentional reverse flow of a fluid, which has only two ways of occurring, backsiphonage or backpressure

Do you mean I could accidentally contaminate our city's drinking water?
Yes, it could happen without your knowledge unless certain precautions are taken whenever there is a chance of a cross connection within your household. For example, have you ever sprayed lawn chemicals using your garden hose or filled a small tub to wash the dog using soapy water? Now is the time to remember that water can flow in "two directions." If the water pressure in your area becomes lower than normal, the soapy water or the lawn chemical can flow backwards through the hose and into your drinking water."

How can I prevent this from happening?
Most businesses have larger water lines than households and have built in protection devices. These devices are inspected and tested annually by certified backflow prevention inspectors. However an average homeowner can prevent backflow problems from occurring by being alert to a potential problem. Ask yourself if there's any way my action could contaminate the water I drink? If the answer is yes, be sure to have an "air gap" of at least 2 inches between the water source and the container you are filling. In short, don't leave the hose running in the tub without a space from the end of the hose and the item you are filling. Ok, you ask - "Mr. Water Man, there's no air space between the hose I'm using and the spigot it's connected to, can this cause backflow? The answer is yes, but water backing up through the spigot can be prevented by installing on all your household outside spigot's a little gadget named "the hose-bib vacuum breaker." The little gadgets are inexpensive and can be purchased at most home supply stores in the area.
