Recreation-Leisure Service Commission

Monday, March 21, 2005

The Recreation-Leisure Service Commission was called to order at 7:33 p.m., Monday, March 21, 2005 in the Community Room of the CAC.  Members present were:  Mike Grosz, Lesa Backstrom, Bob Keating, Laura Gamble, Dale Alexander, and Recreation/CAC Director Jeff Zeiss.  Absent:  Ken Kwapnioski, Pat Garvin, and Kris Loberg.

Motion was made by Commissioner Grosz and seconded by Commissioner Gamble to approve the minutes of Monday, February 21, 2005 as presented.  Motion carried; minutes were approved.

The CAC golf tournament is scheduled for Sunday, April 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Wayne Country Club.  Troy Harder is working on a flyer and will donate $5 form each entry back to the CAC Youth Center.  No rain date has been set as of yet.

Summer registration is scheduled for Friday, April 22 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the CAC.  You can only register for swimming lessons and other swimming activities on Saturday, April 23.  Brochures will be distributed to the schools and businesses at the end of March.

Discussion was held on membership fee options for the CAC.  At the last Council meeting, it was approved to implement a six month option for a full year membership for those citizens around Wayne not receiving a city utility bill.  It is now up to the Recreation Commission to devise a plan and make a recommendation to Council by the end of May.  It was also noted by Commission to leave fees as is but offer a 6-month for all membership groups other than college memberships.

Director Zeiss reported and updated the Commission on activities and events in the Recreation/CAC departments.  Ball room dancing is a new program that meets on Sunday afternoons beginning April 3 through the end of May.  Yoga and Pilates is being offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday as well.  Approximately 10 to 12 are participating.  Calvary Bible had their annual lock-in here on March 18.  Forty-eight youngsters were in attendance.  They had a lot of fun with no major problems.  A big thank you to Jaime Backstrom and Carrie Walton for working the lock-in shifts.

Women's volleyball will play on Thursday evenings ($75 a team).  We have five (5) teams in this new program.  It seems to have gone over really well.  Ladies are having fun.  Also on Thursdays, a 4-on-4 basketball league is underway.  A total of four (4) teams, 23 men ranging in ages from 19 to 44 are participating.  Cost is $20 per player.

In cooperation with the Wayne State College women's soccer program, we will be offering a soccer program beginning April 26 and continuing through May 26 at the CAC fields.  A fee of $40 is being charged to each youngster.

In other business, Commissioner Gamble spoke of the very nice donation made by the hospital of five (5) first aid kits to the girls softball teams ages 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18.

All coaches have been hired for the softball and baseball teams.  Registration is complete.  A new rule this year will require all participants playing softball or baseball ages 11 to 18 to wear a protective face mask on their batting helmet.  This will add costs to each program, but this is a national rule that must be followed.

Discussion was also held on not meeting during the summer months unless situations warrant.  A final decision will be made at the next meeting.

Commissioner Gamble announced that she had spoken to Hank Overin about his illness.  He is taking radiation and chemo and is feeling better.  Mr. Overin might travel back to Wayne at some point; still unclear as to when.

Motion was made by Commissioner Backstrom and seconded by Commissioner Gamble to adjourn.  Motion carried; meeting adjourned at 8:24 p.m.
