Recreation-Leisure Service Commission
Monday, May 16, 2005
The Recreation-Leisure Service Commission was called to
order at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 16, 2005 in the CAC. Members present were: Bob
Keating, Mike Grosz, Lesa Backstrom, Jodi Hoffart, Dale Alexander, Byron Heier,
and Recreation Director Jeff Zeiss.
Laura Gamble and Kris Loberg arrived at 7:36 p.m.
Motion was made by Commissioner Keating and seconded by
Commissioner Backstrom to approve the minutes of Monday, April 18, 2005 as
presented. Motion carried; minutes
approved.
The Commission reviewed the proposed payment options for
those individuals not receiving City of Wayne utility billings. Director Zeiss will include this in his
proposed budget and proposals for 2005-2006 fiscal year.
The Jazzercise program was discussed. Deb Schaefer, director, submitted a general
report on numbers of participants and usage of the community room. Questions arose on the current contract and
if those participants – who are not members of the CAC – are paying the extra
$5. In discussions last November, it
was noted to charge $5 extra to those individuals. Director Zeiss will invite Ms. Schaefer to the September meeting
to discuss the program in general.
Summer registration for all activities including the pool
(April 23) were held on April 22 and 23 at the Activity Center. Traffic was steady for both days (recreation
activities). Next year the golf
payments will be made to the City and then the City will in turn cut a check to
the golf course. The registration days
will be the same for next year. The two
days definitely help the parent's schedules to attend the registration.
Per comments and suggestions from Director Zeiss,
Commissioner Grosz made a motion to implement a $20 late fee per family
beginning the fall of 2005 for all youth activities to help participants
register on a timely manner.
Commissioner Gamble seconded.
All were in favor; motion carried unanimously. It was noted to publicize on all flyers, etc. The Recreation staff will follow-up on this
during each registration event.
Discussions were also held on maintenance at the softball
complex. Mika Ewald and Dustin Nilus
will be responsible for mowing, grooming of fields, garbage, etc. for the
summer. The restrooms at the Softball
Complex also need addressed as they are becoming an eye sore to the
complex. Director Zeiss will include
proposals to the City Council in his budget to try and address the need for a
new restroom/concessions area. Director
Zeiss also mentioned that the city contributed $500 to the softball groups for
additional agri-lime surface for the playing fields. Softball groups will match this when ordering the product.
Sarah and Rachel Jensen will direct the Park Recreation this
year. Andy Martin will direct tennis. Troy Harder will direct the golf
program. All the instructors are being
paid a stipend, other than golf as payments are made directly to them.
Director Zeiss also reported on the Wayne Basketball
Development Association (WBDA) meeting held last week. A handbook is being prepared for parents and
participants, as well as a proposed schedule for three seasons to better define
the WBDA/Recreation programs. Director
Zeiss hopes to have a preliminary copy of the handbook for the members at the
August or September meeting.
There being no further business, motion was made by
Commissioner Heier and seconded by Commissioner Hoffart to adjourn the
meeting. All were in favor; motion
carried; meeting adjourned at 8:36 p.m.
Next meeting will be in August.
