Recreation-Leisure Service Commission

The Recreation-Leisure Service Commission was called to
order at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 21, 2005 in the Community Room of the
Community Activity Center (CAC).
Members present were: Laura
Gamble, Lesa Backstrom, Pat Garvin, Mike Grosz, Jodi Hoffart, and Recreation
Director Jeff Zeiss. Absent: Kris Loberg, Bob Keating, and Byron Heier. Special guests were: Deb Shaefer - Jazzercise instructor and
Rochelle Rogers - participant in Jazzercise.
Motion was made by Commissioner Grosz and seconded by
Commissioner Garvin to approve the minutes of October 17, 2005. Minutes were approved as presented.
Discussion was held in regards to Jazzercise program and its
usage and rental rates and fees. Deb
Schaefer understands that in increase is likely, but wants a consistent fee for
all groups using this room (Community Room).
All commission members agreed that a more uniformed fee be set. Suggestions were to charge a $5 an hour for
usage of the room and $5 per person for non-members of the CAC. Commissioner Grosz suggested that those
groups who use the room once a week be charged $15 per hour, use the room two
to five times a week, be charged $5 per hour.
After much discussion, Commissioner Garvin motioned to table the agenda
item until the next meeting so that the Commission could discuss proposals with
the Mayor. Director Zeiss would set up
a special meeting with the Mayor.
Director Zeiss reported on activities at the Activity Center
and with the Recreation Department.
First and second basketball concluded today with 52 participants who met
once a week for five weeks. The third
and fourth grade boys and girls programs will conclude on November 28 and 29
with intramural games. A total of 52 boys and girls are participating. Volunteers are assisting with the coaching
responsibilities. The fifth and sixth
grade basketball program will begin on December 1 and will continue through
Saturday, January 21. A total of 73 are
registered. The seventh and eighth
grade boys' recreation basketball schedule is also underway with 27 boys who
practice on Tuesday and Thursday through December 16. The WBDA (Wayne Basketball Development Association) registration
is Friday, December 2. Those teams will
begin after January 21. There will be
volunteer coaching in all these age groups.
Commissioner Gamble reported on progress of the softball
restroom project. Things are
progressing with designs approved by the committee. Costs will be determined in the near future and then the
committee will proceed with grants, fundraising, and business drive to assist
with total costs of the project. A
student from Don Buryanek's class at Wayne State College is preparing all the
architectural designs and costs for the committee. Gerhold Concrete is donating all the block for the project. It is of different colors, so it will need
to be stained to match the entire building.
Director Zeiss presented an evacuation procedure report on
emergencies that would affect the Activity Center. In cooperation with the Wayne Public Schools, students will be
evacuated to the Activity Center during emergency situations. A complete procedure policy was forwarded to
all the commission members.
There being no further business, motion was made by
Commissioner Backstrom and seconded by Commissioner Gamble to adjourn the
meeting. Motion carried and the meeting
was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
