Recreation-Leisure Service Commission

The Recreation-Leisure Service Commission was called to
order at 7:31 p.m., Monday, February 16, 2004 in the Community Room of the
Community Activity Center. Members
present were: Pat Garvin, Bob Keating,
Dale Alexander, Ken Kwapnioski, and Director Jeff Zeiss. Absent were: Marta Nelson, Kris Loberg, Mike Grosz, and Jan Magnuson.
Motion made by Commissioner Kwapnioski and seconded by
Commissioner Alexander to approve the minutes of the January 19, 2004
meeting. Motion carried, minutes were
approved.
Review of the Community Room Agreement was tabled until the
next regular meeting when City Administrator Lowell Johnson can be in
attendance. Membership fees were also
tabled until the March meeting.
Director Zeiss updated the Commission on activity at the
Community Activity Center and the Recreation Department. The walking program has reached 5,500 miles;
kickboxing for ages 4 to 13 will begin on February 17; men and women basketball
leagues will conclude in mid-February with their respective league tournaments;
adult co-ed volleyball season will also conclude at the end of February with
their league tournament teams (six total) participating.
Upcoming events are our annual youth basketball tournament
to be held on February 28, approximately 40 teams are participating. On March 19, Calvary Bible will be hosting
an all-night lock-in for youth. A fee
of $75 is being charged. On Sunday,
March 21, the USVBA Volleyball Tournament will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. On March 27 and 28 the State BB
Gun Championship will be held all day at the Community Activity Center. The softball and baseball associations will
be running concessions, with the Community Activity Center keeping all revenues
from the pop.
Softball registrations for girls ages 11 to 18 will be held
on February 23 through 26 at the Community Activity Center. Baseball registration for ages 11 to 14 will
be held on March 1 through 5 at the Community Activity Center. A $25 fee is being charged to all
participants. League meetings have been
held for the 15 to 18 boys baseball (schedules are set); girls league meeting
is scheduled on Sunday, March 7 in Oakland, Nebraska.
In other business, Director Zeiss reported to the Commission
on the progress of the WBDA (Wayne Basketball Development Association). This organization is assisting in the
coaching, etc. of youth basketball.
Also, they are raising monies to purchase adjustable baskets and
equipment for traveling youth teams. Overall, very pleased with all the help and committed efforts of
those involved.
Motion made by Commissioner Garvin and seconded by
Commissioner Kwapnioski to adjourn the meeting. Meeting was adjourned at 8:37 p.m.
