Monday, October 18, 2004
The Recreation-Leisure Service Commission was called to
order at 7:31 p.m., Monday, October 18, 2004 in the Community Room of the
Community Activity Center (CAC).
Members present were Pat Garvin, Mike Grosz, Ken Kwapnioski, and
Recreation/Activity Center Director Jeff Zeiss. Absent: Kris Loberg, Dale
Alexander, and Bob Keating.
Minutes of the September 20, 2004 meeting were not approved
due to a lack of a quorum.
Mr. Todd Young and two guests were present to discuss the
development of a running club in Wayne.
Todd presented information on events, benefits, responsibilities, and
possible costs of forming a running club.
Todd asked if city funds could be used to assist the club and what if any
promotional tools could be used through the Recreation Department to assist the
club. Director Zeiss could not
guarantee financial assistance but indicated the CAC/Recreation Department
would help in other ways. Director
Zeiss would visit with City Administrator Lowell Johnson on direction we could
follow.
No discussion on payment/fee options was discussed. It was noted that at the November 15
meeting, that all members come prepared with ideas for discussion.
Also, CAC/Recreation Director Zeiss updated the Commission
on activities and events from the fall and upcoming activities as well. Youth volleyball for girls grades one to six
had 123 participants with games for the 5th and 6th on
Monday evenings. The 6th
grade girls also participated in the Newcastle tournament and brought home a 3rd
place trophy. Youth football was also
offered and 93 boys grades third to sixth participated.
The 5th and 6th boys participated in
the Logan Valley League and each team placed 3rd in the League
Tournaments. The Youth Football
Association sponsored a bus trip to Dakota Valley in October for all coaches
and 5th and 6th players.
Following the games we stopped in South Sioux City at McDonald's for
lunch. Everyone had a good time. Next year's football format will include
first and second grades incorporated with the 3rd grade in a flag
football program with the 4th through 6th grades still in
full contact.
The Walking Club and recording of miles will begin on
Monday, November 1st. This
usually generates a lot of interest and incentive for our member walkers.
Youth basketball begins on October 25th for first
through fourth grades and fifth and sixth grade will begin December 2nd. Jr. High registration for girls only will be
held December 22nd, with practices to begin December 29th. Adult men's and women's basketball
registration is underway with leagues to begin the week of November 22nd. Adult co-ed volleyball registration is set
to get underway after the first of the year.
At the CAC, the Women of Today will hold their annual Craft
Show on Saturday November 13 from 9:00 to 2:00. The Red Cross is sponsoring a babysitting class for youth on
November 20. Last year over 20
participants were involved.
Commissioner Keating was absent so no report was made on the
Endowment status. The item will be
placed on the November agenda.
In other business, a new basic stationary bike was ordered
(bike was sent back when building first opened) due to high interest from
members.
Memberships have been steady, preparing for large renewals
next month as November is when the building opened in 2002.
Director Zeiss also reported that recently CableOne from
Norfolk shot a commercial of the building and activities involved. Hopefully sometime in mid-November it will
be aired on all cable channels. The
commercial will air in November, December, and January.
There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned. No quorum available to make
a motion.
