Recreation-Leisure Service Commission
Monday, November 15, 2004
The Recreation-Leisure Service Commission was called to
order at 7:33 p.m., Monday, November 15, 2004 in the Community Room of the
CAC. Members present were: Mike Grosz, Laura Gamble, Lesa Backstrom,
Ken Kwapnioski, Bob Keating, Recreation Director Jeff Zeiss, and City
Administrator Lowell Johnson.
Absent: Pat Garvin. Commissioner Dale Alexander arrived at 7:44
p.m.
Motion made by Commissioner Grosz and seconded by
Commissioner Kwapnioski to approve the minutes of Monday, October 18, 2004 as
presented. Motion approved; minutes
approved.
Commissioner Keating explained that this is the last year of
pledges for the Community Activity Center.
He hopes that there is enough funds available as time goes on to assist
in the overall operations of the Activity Center.
Introductions and welcomes were made to the new Commission
members, Lesa Backstrom and Laura Gamble.
The Commission thanked them for accepting the positions and looked
forward to their input for the next two years.
Discussion was held on payment options at the Activity
Center. Eventually when city offices
are equipped with credit card payment options, on a 12-month system, the
Activity Center will be as well.
Other ideas made were to offer a six month membership at a
higher rate with a down payment, then monthly payments for the six months. Commissioner Keating recommended documentary
calls and inquires on requests of payment options. This agenda item will be discussed at future meetings.
Director Zeiss updated the Commission on activities at the
Activity Center. Craft Fair was held by
the Women of Today on Saturday, November 6.
It was very busy from 9:00 to 2:00.
Election polling took place in the Community Room at the Activity
Center. Traffic was high the entire
day. Babysitting classes were held on
Saturdays in the Community Room.
Twenty-four youngsters participated.
Basketball is now underway for grades one to four. There is a league for 3rd and 4th
grade. There will be three intramural
games played on Saturday. The baskets
are lowered to nine feet. This has been
a great asset to the younger levels involved with basketball. Adult leagues are set to begin next week
with the women beginning in December.
There is a new upright bike in the fitness/weight room. The bike originally was part of the
equipment when the building opened; however it was removed (reasons unknown) so
it has been a welcome addition to those members who bicycle on the roads to
stay in shape.
In other business, beginning in the spring of 2005, a $5
late fee per activity will be assessed for youth activities and $10 for
adults. Recreation and Activity Center
staff feel this is justified as numerous registrations are late which causes
conflict on Recreation staff, with teams, t-shirts, etc., are being
determined. In comparison, Norfolk YMCA
charges $25 for late registrations.
Motion was made by Commissioner Keating and seconded by Commissioner
Gamble to enact the late fee. All were
in favor; motion carried.
City Administrator Lowell Johnson updated the Commission on
the status of the cooling and heating system in the Activity Center. This has been a problem since early
summer. It has been determined that a
metal eating bacteria is causing the problem.
The system will eventually be flushed when contracts can be agreed upon.
Director Zeiss reported that the commercial is now running
in conjunction with CableOne. It has
been contracted with CableOne for three months promoting the Activity Center. The commercial will be featured on six to
eight different cable channels through January 16, 2005.
Motion made by Commissioner Alexander and seconded by
Commissioner Loberg to adjourn the meeting.
Motion approved and the meeting was adjourned at 8:54 p.m.
