Recreation-Leisure Services Commission
Monday, January 17, 2005
The Recreation-Leisure Services Commission was called to
order at 7:32 p.m., Monday, January 17, 2005 in the Community Room of the
CAC. Members present were: Pat Garvin, Kris Loberg, Laura Gamble, Ken
Kwapnioski, Mike Grosz, Lesa Backstrom, Dale Alexander, and Recreation Director
Jeff Zeiss. Bob Keating arrived at 7:36
p.m.
Motion was made by Commissioner Kwapnioski and seconded by
Commissioner Grosz to approve the minutes of Monday, November 15, 2004 as
presented. Minutes were approved
unanimously.
Discussion was held regarding implementing other payment
options for the CAC. Eventually credit
cards will be accepted at City Hall for city payments (electric bills) and can
be utilized at the CAC as well. If not
paid by credit card, what other options could be available, especially for
those outside the city limits (seven calls were received from families located
in rural areas). Director Zeiss will
invite City Administrator Lowell Johnson to the next meeting to discuss payment
issues. Director Zeiss also presented
the Commission daily attendance figures for December and January. Monday, Thursday, and Sunday afternoons are
the business days. Monday average 189
members, Thursdays average 174 members, and Sunday afternoons average 164
members. Note: open from 1 to 8 instead of 6 a.m. to 10
p.m., normal hours.
Director Zeiss updated the Commission on current and future
activities. April 24 will be the annual
CAC golf tournament held at the Wayne Country Club. Last year it was not held.
Advertisements for groundskeeper at the softball complex
along with softball, baseball coaches and park/rec tennis instructors are being
accepted until mid-February. This year
a 10 and under softball team will be competing in a traveling league. Randy and Laura Gamble have agreed to
volunteer to coach this team.
Men/Women basketball programs are coming to an end with
playoffs set to begin at the end of the month.
In the women's league for the future, play on the big courts instead of
the quarter courts to help assist in the reduction of rough play. Also it was noted to have two leagues
similar to the men ages 19 to 26 and over 26.
Director Zeiss will implement these changes next year.
Our 17th annual youth basketball tournament will
be held the last weekend of February, expecting 35 to 45 teams participating.
The Wayne Baseball Association was notified last week that
we were awarded the 2005 Jr. Legion Area Tournament this year. A new rule this year has the juniors and
seniors playing at different locations for the area tournament. The seniors are scheduled to play in Omaha
July 14 through the 26.
In other business, it was suggested to put a marquee in the
weight/fitness room noting no street shoes be worn on machines as machines are
becoming dirty, especially during the winter months. Currently staff cleans at closing but more time is needed to
thoroughly wipe down all equipment. CAC
is looking for someone to clean the room once or twice a week for a total of
three to four hours.
There being no further business, motion made by Commissioner
Kwapnioski and seconded by Commissioner Garvin to adjourn the meeting. Motion made and meeting was adjourned at
8:30 p.m.
