Recreation-Leisure Service Commission

Monday, February 21, 2005

The Recreation-Leisure Service Commission was called to order at 7:36 p.m., Monday, February 21, 2005 in the Community Room of the CAC.  Members present were:  Mike Grosz, Pat Garvin, Bob Keating, Kris Loberg, Dale Alexander, Recreation/CAC Director Jeff Zeiss, and City Administrator Lowell Johnson.  Absent:  Laura Gamble, Lesa Backstrom, and Ken Kwapnioski.

Motion was made by Commissioner Garvin and seconded by Commissioner Grosz to approve the minutes of Monday, January 17, 2005 as presented.  Minutes were approved unanimously.

Administrator Johnson was present to discuss and assist the Commission in making a recommendation to the City Council on options for fee payments for those individuals or families residing out of the city limits of Wayne. Commissioner Grosz motioned and seconded by Commissioner Loberg to make a proposal/recommendation to the City Council for a six-month payment option for a full year (annual) membership for anyone not receiving a City of Wayne utility billing statement.  Motion carried with all in favor.  Director Zeiss will prepare a memo and forward the same on to Administrator Johnson.

Softball registration for girls' ages 10 to 18 will be held at the CAC on February 22, 23, and 24 from 5 to 7 p.m.  Boys baseball registration will also be held but on March 1, 2, and 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. for ages 11 to 14.  The 15 to 18 year old boys will register and a parents meeting will be held on March 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Director Zeiss reported that all groups have coaches.  Instructors are still needed for the tennis program.  However, the summer registration will take place on April 22 and 23.  On April 22, only recreation activities will register from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, April 23 all other activities including swimming poll will register from 9 to 12 p.m. at the CAC.  Summer brochures will be distributed at the end of March.

Current events and future activities were also discussed.  Calvary Bible will have their annual lock-in at the CAC on Friday night/Saturday morning, March 18, beginning at 9:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. on March 19.  On April 17, the USVBA Volleyball Tournament will be held at the CAC from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The team-mates annual walk-a-thon will follow on this day beginning at 3:00 p.m.  Pilates and Yoga classes will begin in early March through the first of May.  The 17th Annual Youth Basketball tournament will be held this weekend with 42 teams participating.  Games will be played at the CAC and Wayne High School.

Wayne Baseball Association will plan to host the 2005 Jr. Legion Baseball Tournament July 14 through the 26th at Hank Overin Field.  This group is working with the Pepsi Company on purchasing a new scoreboard as well.

The CAC will also play host to a golf tournament on April 24 to help raise funds for the youth center, specifically equipment.  There is a $5 entry fee and proceeds will go towards this endeavor.

In other business, Commissioner Keating was approached by a parent in regards to the Jr.High Basketball and WBDA group.  There some confusion on who sponsors these groups.  Because of the change in the boys program, then the Middle School, the WBDA sponsors this group and the city sponsors the girls.  The WBDA board is currently working on a handbook to spell out policies, etc.  In the future, the WBDA will handle all the groups to help clarify any confusion or concerns.

There being no further business, motion was made by Commissioner Keating and seconded by Commissioner Garvin to adjourn the meeting.  The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
