MEETINGS / EVENTS ATTENDED:

  • Lauran Lofgren gave the annual report presentation to the city council.
  • Lauran Lofgren and Julie Osnes made the WPL request to United Way for 2004 and 05 Summer Reading Program funding.  United Way gave an additional $250 to cover the costs of this year's spectacular turnout and will donate $900 for the 2005 program.
  • Lauran Lofgren met with Kathy Ellerton of the Northeast Library System to begin preparation for the Basic Skills class (to be held November 16, 23, and 30 at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk).
  • Julie Osnes attended a book workshop in Norfolk on July 31.

STAFF PROJECTS AND CONCERNS:

  • The library hosted Bob Porter's kite-making sessions again this summer the week before the Chicken Show.  Several children participated.
  • The Summer Reading Program wrapped up.  We had a grand total of 386 enrollees with 330 actually participating by attending sessions and/or reading.  A total of 5,758 books were read by the participants, well over the program's original goal.
  • The Optimists held a coloring and poster contest in conjunction with Session II of the SRP.  They awarded prizes at our final awards party on July 28.
  • Pam Boehle left our employ as Children's Librarian on July 31.  She has asked to remain on-call as a substitute.
  • Julie Osnes began her duties as Children's Librarian on July 19 and spent 34 hours working with Pam.  After a week off in early August, she will begin her solo duties on Monday, August 9.
  • Julie Osnes is planning an Olympics evening for kids on Thursday, August 12 from 6-8 p.m.  There will be activities and snacks to help kids learn about and get excited for the Summer Olympics that begin on August 13.
  • The Library was one of several city facilities that were part of a tour for the League of Municipalities bard that met in Wayne on July 8.
  • Thanks to Joel Ankeny, a formal request to the Wayne County Commissioners was filed prior to the deadline of August 1.  WPL should be notified of a decision by September 1.
  • Beth Ann Sharer took some emergency leave.
  • Lauran Lofgren took some vacation time.

COMPUTER ISSUES:

  • Follett was down a couple of times during the month.  Brian Kesting took care of the problem each time within just a few hours.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

  • The next Lewis and Clark event will be August 23 at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Ley Theatre at WSC.  William Kloefkorn (State Poet) will discuss his book about Patrick Gass of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
  • September 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. in front of library.  Bus-eum tour on Mid-west Nazi prisoners.

OLD BUSINESS:

  • 2004-2005 budget – Received word on proposed budget from Nancy Braden.  The budget is nearly as requested; however, it has a lower new book total.

NEW BUSINESS:

  • The board voted to move $2000 that had been held in reserve to the fye 2004 book budget.
  • The board voted to update the library's Internet use policy.
  • Runza will host a library fundraiser on September 14.  A portion of their sales from that day will be given to the library as part of their Great Books for Great Kids program.

The meeting was adjourned.  The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 7 at 5:15 p.m. in the Library meeting room.

Respectfully submitted,

Mary Carstens

Board Secretary
